Good evening, James...

I just discovered that there is no support for Pine's text-based mail and
news editor. Or is there? Is that part of the hideous new-and-improved
licensing agreement at the University of Washington I read something about
last summer? Or is there a "special place" I have to look? Hmm.

You guessed it. Pine has licensing restrictions that do not allowed modified
binaries to be distributed.

Put this line in /etc/apt/sources.list :

deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

Run these from a temporary directory:
apt-get update
apt-get build-dep pine
apt-get -b source pine
dpkg -i *.deb
